Jessica Taylor, Assistant Professor of Clinical Counseling; Director of Assessment of Master of Science in Clinical Counseling (MSCC) Program; MSCC Program Coordinator - St. Louis at CMU

We all know that treating people differently based on their personal characteristics is wrong – but what about when we are unaware that we are doing it? This presentation will discuss implicit bias, ways we may unknowingly treat students differently based on our own assumptions and biases, and how college staff can become more aware of interacting from a place of implicit bias. Various aspects of cultural differences will be identified, and the ways in which these differences may interact with implicit bias in the college setting will be discussed. Attendees will be provided with suggestions for ways to develop their cultural competence and reduce the negative effects of implicit bias in the college setting.
