Press Release: MCCA Creates 2020 Virtual Annual Convention

Jefferson City, MO — MCCA today announced that it will cancel its annual in-person convention to be held at St. Louis Union Station out of concern for the health and safety of attendees related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. MCCA has instead created a new virtual experience to take place on November 11-13.

As the must-attend event for community college and workforce development professionals, MCCA's inaugural virtual convention will provide the same vibrant programming, networking opportunities, and engaging entertainment as our in-person event.

Annual Phi Theta Kappa Celebration Goes Virtual

For the first time, the annual MCCA Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society celebration went virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that has shifted classes online. Even though the Wednesday, April 22 in-person gathering was canceled, the moment was no less momentous with remarks Mun Y. Choi, President, University of Missouri System and Interim Chancellor, University of Missouri, the event sponsor, and Dr. Raymond Cummiskey, President of Jefferson College, served as the keynote.

Dr. Cummiskey is one of 10 retiring college presidents and chancellors recently recognized with the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. These awards are given to retiring college presidents who have shown strong support of student success on their campus by recognizing academic achievement, leadership, and service among high-achieving students over the course of their career. Recipients are nominated by the students on their campus.

Get published on the MCCA website

Every month, we hope to feature an article or whitepaper written by an MCCA member. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Articles featuring tips and best practices that are relevant to a large number of MCCA members (i.e. Faculty, Administrators, or Classified Staff)
  • Whitepapers exploring emerging challenges or innovative new programs and initiatives at community colleges
  • Regardless of the format, the writing should help readers understand and hopefully solve a common problem.
  • There’s no minimum or maximum word count, but we are looking for writing that is concise, well-written, and fully-conveys the idea presented.
  • The work should be your own. Any outside sources should be quoted and cited appropriately using an academic style such as APA or MLA.

 Some additional guidelines:

  • MCCA staff and volunteers will review your work for error, and reserves the right to make changes based on readability.
  • Once your work has been approved, it will be published on the MCCA website and will be shared on our social media pages and in our monthly professional development e-mail update.
  • Acceptable file formats include .doc, .docx, and .pdf.
